We are delighted to welcome back Italian-Australian pianist Jonathan Ferrucci as a solo pianist, after his wonderful concert with cellist Madelyn Kowalski in a previous season. His current focus is on Bach, having just released a CD of Bach Toccatas, and he will be presenting two of Bach's English Suites in this programme.

B i o g r a p h y

Italian-Australian pianist Jonathan Ferrucci is recognised for his luminous sound, imaginative interpretations, and profound affinity with the music of J. S. Bach. He has performed internationally at Wigmore Hall, Barbican Hall, Kings Place, Carnegie Weill Hall, the Fazioli Concert Hall, and major Italian venues including Sala dei Giganti (Padua) and Teatro Comunale (Vicenza). He is a prize winner of the International Bach Competition in Leipzig and a Kirckman Concert Society Artist and a Keyboard Trust Artist.

Jonathan’s current artistic path has centred on complete Bach cycles — from a widely acclaimed tour of the Goldberg Variations, to the Toccatas (recorded for Audite), and now the English Suites, which he explored during a residency at Yellow Barn (USA). In recent seasons he has appeared with the Orchestra da Camera di Perugia alongside his mentor Angela Hewitt, as well as at festivals including the Brighton Festival, Trasimeno Music Festival, and Wimbledon International Music Festival.

His debut studio album, Bach: Complete Toccatas, was nominated for the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik and received outstanding critical reception. BR Klassik wrote: “Bach is something like his daily bread. He plays it, listens to it, breathes it.” Pizzicato called the recording “a revelation,” while Piano News praised its “great sense of architecture and freedom.”

Jonathan has a strong interest in cross-disciplinary collaborations and in exploring fresh perspectives on familiar repertoire. This has led to projects such as his audio-visual collaboration with photographer Matthew Johnson, translating each variation of the Goldberg Variations into a unique movement or shape.

Born in Florence, he studied at the Florence Conservatoire and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. His artistic formation has been shaped by Giovanni Carmassi and Joan Havill, deeply influenced by Angela Hewitt, and enriched through work with Robert Levin, Aldo Ciccolini, and Zhu Xiao-Mei.

Alongside his musical career, Jonathan has cultivated a committed Ashtanga Yoga practice since his early twenties. Introduced first to the Iyengar tradition, he later discovered Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in Milan with Rosa Tagliaferro and now continues under Hamish Hendry in London. For Jonathan, yoga is a form of moving meditation that strengthens physical awareness, resilience, and clarity of mind — qualities that directly inform his approach to sound, movement, and presence at the piano. He sees deep parallels between the two disciplines: they both demand focus, patience, and an openness to discovery; they both nurture a sense of unity between intention and expression, and they are both ultimately practices of devotion.
